Access SAP Netweaver Gateway Data in Mule Applications Using the CData JDBC Driver



Create a simple Mule Application that uses HTTP and SQL with the CData JDBC Driver for SAP Netweaver Gateway to create a JSON endpoint for SAP Netweaver Gateway data.

The CData JDBC Driver for SAP Netweaver Gateway connects SAP Netweaver Gateway data to Mule applications enabling read , write, update, and delete functionality with familiar SQL queries. The JDBC Driver allows users to easily create Mule applications to backup, transform, report, and analyze SAP Netweaver Gateway data.

This article demonstrates how to use the CData JDBC Driver for SAP Netweaver Gateway inside of a Mule project to create a Web interface for SAP Netweaver Gateway data. The application created allows you to request SAP Netweaver Gateway data using an HTTP request and have the results returned as JSON. The exact same procedure outlined below can be used with any CData JDBC Driver to create a Web interface for the 200+ available data sources.

  1. Create a new Mule Project in Anypoint Studio.
  2. Add an HTTP Connector to the Message Flow.
  3. Configure the address for the HTTP Connector.
  4. Add a Database Select Connector to the same flow, after the HTTP Connector.
  5. Create a new Connection (or edit an existing one) and configure the properties.
    • Set Connection to "Generic Connection"
    • Select the CData JDBC Driver JAR file in the Required Libraries section (e.g. cdata.jdbc.sapgateway.jar).
    • Set the URL to the connection string for SAP Netweaver Gateway

      SAP Gateway allows both basic and OAuth 2.0 authentication. You can use basic authentication to connect to your own account, or you can use OAuth to enable other users to retrieve data from your service with their accounts. In addition to authenticating, set the following connection properties to access SAP Gateway tables.

      • Url: Set this to the URL of your environment, or to the full URL of the service. For example, the full URL might appear as: https://sapes5.sapdevcenter.com/sap/opu/odata/IWBEP/GWSAMPLE_BASIC/. In this example, the environment URL would just be: https://sapes5.sapdevcenter.com.
      • Namespace: Set the appropriate Service Namespace. In the example above, IWBEP is the namespace. It is optional if the full URL to the service is specified.
      • Service: Set this to the service you want to retrieve data from. In the example above, the service is GWSAMPLE_BASIC. It is not required if the full URL is specified.

      Authenticate via Basic Authentication

      In basic authentication, you use your login credentials to connect. Set the following properties:

      • User: This is the username you use to log in to SAP Gateway.
      • Password: This is the password you use to log in to SAP Gateway.

      Authenticate via OAuth Authentication

      You can connect to SAP Gateway using the embedded OAuth connectivity (without setting any additional authentication connection properties). When you connect, the OAuth endpoint opens in your browser. Log in and grant permissions to complete the OAuth process. See the OAuth section in the online Help documentation for more information on other OAuth authentication flows.

      Built-in Connection String Designer

      For assistance in constructing the JDBC URL, use the connection string designer built into the SAP Netweaver Gateway JDBC Driver. Either double-click the JAR file or execute the jar file from the command-line.

      java -jar cdata.jdbc.sapgateway.jar

      Fill in the connection properties and copy the connection string to the clipboard.

    • Set the Driver class name to cdata.jdbc.sapgateway.SAPGatewayDriver.
    • Click Test Connection.
  6. Set the SQL Query Text to a SQL query to request SAP Netweaver Gateway data. For example: SELECT ProductID, Quantity FROM SalesOrderLineItems WHERE Quantity < 15
  7. Add a Transform Message Component to the flow.
  8. Set the Output script to the following to convert the payload to JSON:

  9. To view your SAP Netweaver Gateway data, navigate to the address you configured for the HTTP Connector (localhost:8081 by default): http://localhost:8081. The SAP Netweaver Gateway data is available as JSON in your Web browser and any other tools capable of consuming JSON endpoints.
