Connect to DB2 Data from a Connection Pool in Jetty

The DB2 JDBC Driver supports connection pooling: This article shows how to connect faster to DB2 data from Web apps in Jetty.

The CData JDBC driver for DB2 is easy to integrate with Java Web applications. This article shows how to efficiently connect to DB2 data in Jetty by configuring the driver for connection pooling. You will configure a JNDI resource for DB2 in Jetty.

Configure the JDBC Driver for Salesforce as a JNDI Data Source

Follow the steps below to connect to Salesforce from Jetty.

  1. Enable the JNDI module for your Jetty base. The following command enables JNDI from the command-line:

    java -jar ../start.jar --add-to-startd=jndi
  2. Add the CData and license file, located in the lib subfolder of the installation directory, into the lib subfolder of the context path.
  3. Declare the resource and its scope. Enter the required connection properties in the resource declaration. This example declares the DB2 data source at the level of the Web app, in WEB-INF\jetty-env.xml.

    <Configure id='db2demo' class="org.eclipse.jetty.webapp.WebAppContext"> <New id="db2demo" class="org.eclipse.jetty.plus.jndi.Resource"> <Arg><Ref refid="db2demo"/></Arg> <Arg>jdbc/db2db</Arg> <Arg> <New class="cdata.jdbc.db2.DB2Driver"> <Set name="url">jdbc:db2:</Set> <Set name="Server">10.0.1.2</Set> <Set name="Port">50000</Set> <Set name="User">admin</Set> <Set name="Password">admin</Set> <Set name="Database">test</Set> </New> </Arg> </New> </Configure>

Set the following properties to connect to DB2:

    • Server: Set this to the name of the server running DB2.
    • Port: Set this to the port the DB2 server is listening on.
    • Database: Set this to the name of the DB2 database.
    • User: Set this to the username of a user allowed to access the database.
    • Password: Set this to the password of a user allowed to access the database.

You will also need to install the corresponding DB2 driver:

    • Windows: Install the IBM Data Server Provider for .NET.

On Windows, installing the IBM Data Server Provider is sufficient, as the installation registers it in the machine.config.

    • Java: Install the IBM Data Server Driver for JDBC.

In the Java version, place the IBM Data Server Driver JAR in the www\WEB-INF\lib\ folder for this application.

  4. Configure the resource in the Web.xml:

    jdbc/db2db javax.sql.DataSource Container
  5. You can then access DB2 with a lookup to java:comp/env/jdbc/db2db: InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext(); DataSource mydb2 = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/db2db");

More Jetty Integration

The steps above show how to configure the driver in a simple connection pooling scenario. For more use cases and information, see the Working with Jetty JNDI chapter in the Jetty documentation.
