How to set FedEx data as a JDBC data source in FineReport.

The CData JDBC Driver for FedEx fully implements the JDBC standard and can provide FedEx data connectivity to a wide variety of BI, reporting, and ETL tools and custom applications. In this article, we explain how to set FedEx data as JDBC data source in FineReport and view FedEx data as a table in the Report Designer.

Set Up a JDBC Data Source of FedEx Data

Follow the instruction below to set FedEx data as a FineReport database connection.

  1. Copy the cdata.jdbc.fedex.jar file from the lib folder in the CData JDBC Driver for FedEx installation directory to the lib folder of the FineReport installation directory. You will need to copy the cdata.jdbc.fedex.lic file as well.
  2. From the Server tab, select Define Data Connection, click to add a new connection, and click JDBC.

Next we will set up the data connection definition in the window.

  1. Database: Others
  2. JDBC Driver: cdata.jdbc.fedex.FedEx Driver
  3. URL: A standard JDBC connection string using semicolon-separated connection properties.

    There are five pieces of information needed in order to authenticate its actions with the FedEx service. This information is below.

    • Server: This controls the URL where the requests should be sent. Common testing options for this are: "https://gatewaybeta.fedex.com:443/xml", "https://wsbeta.fedex.com:443/xml", "https://gatewaybeta.fedex.com:443/web-service", and "https://wsbeta.fedex.com:443/web-service"
    • DeveloperKey: This is the identifier part of the authentication key for the sender's identity. This value will be provided to you by FedEx after registration.
    • Password: This is the secret part of the authentication key for the sender's identity. This value will be provided to you by FedEx after registration.
    • AccountNumber: This valid 9-digit FedEx account number is used for logging into the FedEx server.
    • MeterNumber: This value is used for submitting requests to FedEx. This value will be provided to you by FedEx after registration.
    • PrintLabelLocation: This property is required if one intends to use the GenerateLabels or GenerateReturnLabels stored procedures. This should be set to the folder location where generated labels should be stored.

    The Cache Database

    Many of the useful tasks available from FedEx require a lot of data. To ensure this data is easy to input and recall later, utilizes a cache database to make these requests. You must set the cache connection properties:

    • CacheProvider: The specific database you are using to cache with. For example, org.sqlite.JDBC.
    • CacheConnection: The connection string to be passed to the cache provider. For example, jdbc:sqlite:C:\users\username\documents\fedexcache.db

    Built-in Connection String Designer

    For assistance in constructing the JDBC URL, use the connection string designer built into the FedEx JDBC Driver. Either double-click the JAR file or execute the jar file from the command-line.

    java -jar cdata.jdbc.fedex.jar

    Fill in the connection properties and copy the connection string to the clipboard.

    When you configure the JDBC URL, you may also want to set the Max Rows connection property. This will limit the number of rows returned, which is especially helpful for improving performance when designing reports and visualizations.

    A typical JDBC URL is below:

  4. Click Connection pool attributes and set Test before getting connections to No.

Click Test connection to ensure you have configured the connection properly. With the connection to FedEx set up, you can use it as FineReport data source.

Select FedEx Data in the Report Designer.

  1. Click to add a new template data set and select DB query to open the database query window.
  2. Choose the JDBC connection that you created from the dropdown list.
  3. The FedEx entities will appear as tables on the left pane.
  4. Write a SELECT statement for the FedEx data tables and columns that you want to load.
  5. Click preview and data is shown as table.

With these simple steps, FedEx can be used as a JDBC data source in FineReport.
