The Google Data Catalog ODBC Driver is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with live data from Google Data Catalog, directly from any applications that support ODBC connectivity.

Access Google Data Catalog data like you would a database - read, write, and update Google Data Catalog Schemas, Tables, etc. through a standard ODBC Driver interface.

Connect to Google Data Catalog Data from PowerBuilder

This article demonstrates how to use the CData ODBC Driver for Google Data Catalog to connect to Google Data Catalog data and execute queries in PowerBuilder.

The CData ODBC Driver for Google Data Catalog can be used from any platform or development technology that supports ODBC, including PowerBuilder. This article shows how to connect to Google Data Catalog data and execute queries from the Database Painter and controls such as the DataWindow.

Connect to Google Data Catalog as an ODBC Data Source

If you have not already, first specify connection properties in an ODBC DSN (data source name). This is the last step of the driver installation. You can use the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to create and configure ODBC DSNs.

Google Data Catalog uses the OAuth authentication standard. Authorize access to Google APIs on behalf on individual users or on behalf of users in a domain.

Before connecting, specify the following to identify the organization and project you would like to connect to:

  • OrganizationId: The ID associated with the Google Cloud Platform organization resource you would like to connect to. Find this by navigating to the cloud console.

Click the project selection drop-down, and select your organization from the list. Then, click More -> Settings. The organization ID is displayed on this page.

  • ProjectId: The ID associated with the Google Cloud Platform project resource you would like to connect to.

Find this by navigating to the cloud console dashboard and selecting your project from the Select from drop-down. The project ID will be present in the Project info card.

When you connect, the OAuth endpoint opens in your default browser. Log in and grant permissions to the application to completes the OAuth process. For more information, refer to the OAuth section in the Help documentation.

Create a Profile for the ODBC Driver for Google Data Catalog

Follow the steps below to use the Database Painter tool to create a database profile based on an ODBC DSN (data source name) for Google Data Catalog. In the Database Painter, you can use wizards and the UI to work with Google Data Catalog data.

  1. In PowerBuilder, click Tools -> Database Painter.
  2. In the Objects window in the Database Painter, right-click the ODBC node and click New Profile.
  3. On the Connection tab, enter a name for the profile and select the Google Data Catalog DSN in the Data Source menu.
  4. To view and modify a table, right-click a table and then click Edit Data -> Grid.

Using Google Data Catalog Data with PowerBuilder Controls

You can use standard PowerBuilder objects to connect to ODBC data sources and execute queries. The following example shows how to retrieve Google Data Catalog data into a DataWindow. You can add the following code to the open method:

SQLCA.DBMS = "ODBC" SQLCA.DBParm = "ConnectString='DSN=CData GoogleDataCatalog Source'" CONNECT USING SQLCA; dw_schemas.SetTransObject(SQLCA); dw_schemas.Retrieve();
