Load Okta Data to a Database Using Embulk

Use CData JDBC drivers with the open source ETL/ELT tool Embulk to load Okta data to a database.

Embulk is an open source bulk data loader. When paired with the CData JDBC Driver for Okta, Embulk easily loads data from Okta to any supported destination. In this article, we explain how to use the CData JDBC Driver for Okta in Embulk to load Okta data to a MySQL dtabase.

With built-in optimized data processing, the CData JDBC Driver offers unmatched performance for interacting with live Okta data. When you issue complex SQL queries to Okta, the driver pushes supported SQL operations, like filters and aggregations, directly to Okta and utilizes the embedded SQL engine to process unsupported operations client-side (often SQL functions and JOIN operations).

Configure a JDBC Connection to Okta Data

Before creating a bulk load job in Embulk, note the installation location for the JAR file for the JDBC Driver (typically C:\Program Files\CData\CData JDBC Driver for Okta\lib).

Embulk supports JDBC connectivity, so you can easily connect to Okta and execute SQL queries. Before creating a bulk load job, create a JDBC URL for authenticating with Okta.

To connect to Okta, set the Domain connection string property to your Okta domain.

You will use OAuth to authenticate with Okta, so you need to create a custom OAuth application.

Creating a Custom OAuth Application

From your Okta account:

  1. Sign in to your Okta developer edition organization with your administrator account.
  2. In the Admin Console, go to Applications > Applications.
  3. Click Create App Integration.
  4. For the Sign-in method, select OIDC - OpenID Connect.
  5. For Application type, choose Web Application.
  6. Enter a name for your custom application.
  7. Set the Grant Type to Authorization Code. If you want the token to be automatically refreshed, also check Refresh Token.
  8. Set the callback URL:
    • For desktop applications and headless machines, use http://localhost:33333 or another port number of your choice. The URI you set here becomes the CallbackURL property.
    • For web applications, set the callback URL to a trusted redirect URL. This URL is the web location the user returns to with the token that verifies that your application has been granted access.
  9. In the Assignments section, either select Limit access to selected groups and add a group, or skip group assignment for now.
  10. Save the OAuth application.
  11. The application's Client Id and Client Secret are displayed on the application's General tab. Record these for future use. You will use the Client Id to set the OAuthClientId and the Client Secret to set the OAuthClientSecret.
  12. Check the Assignments tab to confirm that all users who must access the application are assigned to the application.
  13. On the Okta API Scopes tab, select the scopes you wish to grant to the OAuth application. These scopes determine the data that the app has permission to read, so a scope for a particular view must be granted for the driver to have permission to query that view. To confirm the scopes required for each view, see the view-specific pages in Data Model < Views in the Help documentation.

Built-in Connection String Designer

For assistance in constructing the JDBC URL, use the connection string designer built into the Okta JDBC Driver. Either double-click the JAR file or execute the jar file from the command-line.

java -jar cdata.jdbc.okta.jar

Fill in the connection properties and copy the connection string to the clipboard.

Below is a typical JDBC connection string for Okta:

jdbc:okta:Domain=dev-44876464.okta.com;InitiateOAuth=GETANDREFRESH

Load Okta Data in Embulk

After installing the CData JDBC Driver and creating a JDBC connection string, install the required Embulk plugins.

Install Embulk Input & Output Plugins

  1. Install the JDBC Input Plugin in Embulk.
    https://github.com/embulk/embulk-input-jdbc/tree/master/embulk-input-jdbc
  2. embulk gem install embulk-input-jdbc
  3. In this article, we use MySQL as the destination database. You can also choose SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Google BigQuery as the destination using the output Plugins.
    https://github.com/embulk/embulk-output-jdbc/tree/master/embulk-output-mysql embulk gem install embulk-output-mysql

With the input and output plugins installed, we are ready to load Okta data into MySQL using Embulk.

Create a Job to Load Okta Data

Start by creating a config file in Embulk, using a name like okta-mysql.yml.

  1. For the input plugin options, use the CData JDBC Driver for Okta, including the path to the driver JAR file, the driver class (e.g. cdata.jdbc.okta.OktaDriver), and the JDBC URL from above
  2. For the output plugin options, use the values and credentials for the MySQL database

Sample Config File (okta-mysql.yml)

in: type: jdbc driver_path: C:\Program Files\CData[product_name] 20xx\lib\cdata.jdbc.okta.jar driver_class: cdata.jdbc.okta.OktaDriver url: jdbc:okta:Domain=dev-44876464.okta.com;InitiateOAuth=REFRESH table: "Users" out: type: mysql host: localhost database: DatabaseName user: UserId password: UserPassword table: "Users" mode: insert

After creating the file, run the Embulk job.

embulk run okta-mysql.yml

After running the the Embulk job, find the Salesforce data in the MySQL table.

Load Filtered Okta Data

In addition to loading data directly from a table, you can use a custom SQL query to have more granular control of the data loaded. You can also perform increment loads by setting a last updated column in a SQL WHERE clause in the query field.

in: type: jdbc driver_path: C:\Program Files\CData[product_name] 20xx\lib\cdata.jdbc.okta.jar driver_class: cdata.jdbc.okta.OktaDriver url: jdbc:okta:Domain=dev-44876464.okta.com;InitiateOAuth=REFRESH query: "SELECT Id, ProfileFirstName FROM Users WHERE [RecordId] = 1" out: type: mysql host: localhost database: DatabaseName user: UserId password: UserPassword table: "Users" mode: insert
