How to view Sage 50 UK data in RAD Studio Data Explorer using the CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK.
Embarcadero RAD Studio provides a development environment for Delphi and C++Builder applications. With the CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK, you gain access to live Sage 50 UK data within RAD Studio, abstracting the data into tables, views, and stored procedures that can be used to both retrieve and update Sage 50 UK data. This article will walk through connecting to Sage 50 UK using the Data Explorer.
Configure a Connection to Sage 50 UK
If you have not already, first specify connection properties in an ODBC DSN (data source name). This is the last step of the driver installation. You can use the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to create and configure ODBC DSNs.
Note: Only Sage 50 UK 2012 and above are supported.
The User and Password properties, under the Connection section, must be set to valid Sage 50 UK user credentials. These values will be the same used to log in to the Sage 50 UK software.
Additionally, the URL property, under the Connection section, will need to be set to the address of the company dataset desired. To obtain the address, do the following:
- If you have not already done so, open the Sage 50 UK software.
- Click Tools -> Internet Options.
- Select the SData Settings tab.
- Click the Details button next to Sage 50 Accounts. A window is displayed containing a list of company names along with the address to their corresponding datasets.
- Set the URL property to the value in the address field next to the company desired.
Connecting to Sage 50 UK Data Using Data Explorer
You can create a simple application for displaying Sage 50 UK data by utilizing the CData FireDAC Components for Sage 50 UK and a new VCL Forms Application:
- Open the Data Explorer in RAD Studio and expand FireDAC.
- Right-click the ODBC Data Source node in the Data Explorer.
- Click Add New Connection.
- Enter a name for the connection.
- In the FireDAC Connection Editor that appears, set the DataSource property to the name of the ODBC DSN for Sage 50 UK.
- Back in the Data Explorer, expand the tables for the connection.
Create a new VCL Forms application and drag a table (for example: TradingAccounts) onto the form.
- Select the TradingAccountsTable object on the form and set the Active property to true.
Right-click on the object, bind visually, and link everything (*) to a new control (TStringGrid).
Arrange the TStringGrid on the form and run the application to see the TradingAccounts data.
