Analyze Cvent Data in Infragistics Reveal
Reveal is a data visualization solution provided by Infragistics and can be paired with the CData API Server to build dynamic dashboards from live Cvent data. The CData API Server generates an OData API for Cvent, which is natively consumable in Reveal. In this article, we walk through connecting to Cvent in API Server and connecting to the API Server from Infragistics Reveal to create a simple dashboard.
Connect to Cvent from API Server
CData API Server uses a straightforward, point-and-click interface to connect to data sources and generate APIs.
- Open API Server and click Settings -> Connection -> Add Connection
- Select "Cvent"
- Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to Cvent.
Before you can authenticate to Cvent, you must create a workspace and an OAuth application.
Creating a Workspace
To create a workspace:
- Sign into Cvent and navigate to App Switcher (the blue button in the upper right corner of the page) >> Admin.
- In the Admin menu, navigate to Integrations >> REST API.
- A new tab launches for Developer Management. Click on Manage API Access in the new tab.
- Create a Workspace and name it. Select the scopes you would like your developers to have access to. Scopes control what data domains the developer can access.
- Choose All to allow developers to choose any scope, and any future scopes added to the REST API.
- Choose Custom to limit the scopes developers can choose for their OAuth apps to selected scopes. To access all tables exposed by the driver, you need to set the following scopes:
event/attendees:read event/attendees:write event/contacts:read event/contacts:write event/custom-fields:read event/custom-fields:write event/events:read event/events:write event/sessions:delete event/sessions:read event/sessions:write event/speakers:delete event/speakers:read event/speakers:write budget/budget-items:read budget/budget-items:write exhibitor/exhibitors:read exhibitor/exhibitors:write survey/surveys:read survey/surveys:write
Creating an OAuth Application
After you have set up a Workspace and invited them, developers can sign up and create a custom OAuth app. See the Creating a Custom OAuth Application section in the Help documentation for more information.
Connecting to Cvent
After creating an OAuth application, set the following connection properties to connect to Cvent:
- InitiateOAuth: GETANDREFRESH. Used to automatically get and refresh the OAuthAccessToken.
- OAuthClientId: The Client ID associated with the OAuth application. You can find this on the Applications page in the Cvent Developer Portal.
- OAuthClientSecret: The Client secret associated with the OAuth application. You can find this on the Applications page in the Cvent Developer Portal.
Add Cvent Resource Definitions in API Server
After connecting to Cvent, create Resources, which represent API endpoints for Cvent data.
- Click Settings -> Resources -> Add Resource
- Select the Cvent connection
- Select the table you wish to retrieve and click Next
- (Optional) Edit the resource to select specific fields and more
- Save the settings
Add an API Server User
Create a User to connect to Cvent from Reveal through API Server.
- Click Settings -> Users
- Click Add
- Configure a User with access to the Cvent Connection and Resource(s)
(Optional) Configure Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS)
When accessing and connecting to multiple different domains from an application such as Ajax, there is a possibility of violating the limitations of cross-site scripting. In that case, configure the CORS settings in Settings -> Server.
- Enable cross-origin resource sharing (CORS): ON
- Allow all domains without '*': ON
- Access-Control-Allow-Methods: GET, PUT, POST, OPTIONS
- Access-Control-Allow-Headers: Authorization
Save the changes to the settings.
Create a Dashboard in Reveal
With the API Server configured, we can visualize Cvent data in Reveal.
- Log into Reveal and click Dashboards -> New
- Click Data Source -> OData Feed
- Specify the API Server API endpoint URL, for example: https://serverurl/api.rsc
- Select Generic Credentials and specify the API Server username and authentication token
- Select the entity you wish to visualize
- Select fields and choose a chart type
