Visualize Live Linear Data in Power BI (via CData Connect AI)
Power BI transforms your company's data into rich visuals for you to collect and organize so you can focus on what matters to you. When paired with CData Connect AI, you get access to Linear data for visualizations, dashboards, and more. This article shows how to use CData Connect to create a live connection to Linear, connect to Linear data from Power BI and then create reports on Linear data in Power BI.
Configure Linear Connectivity for Power BI
Connectivity to Linear from Power BI is made possible through CData Connect AI. To work with Linear data from Power BI, we start by creating and configuring a Linear connection.
- Log into Connect AI, click Sources, and then click Add Connection
- Select "Linear" from the Add Connection panel
-
Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to Linear.
You can authenticate to Linear with a personal API key or with OAuth 2.0. The API key is the simplest option for connecting with your own Linear account.
Authenticating with an API Key
Set the following connection properties:
- AuthScheme: Set this to APIKey.
- APIKey: A Linear personal API key.
To create a personal API key, log in to Linear, open Settings > Security & access > Personal API keys, select New API key, and create it. Copy the key immediately, because Linear shows it only once.
Authenticating with OAuth
OAuth requires a custom OAuth application registered in Linear (Settings > API > OAuth applications), which provides the OAuthClientId and OAuthClientSecret. Two flows are supported:
- Authorization code: Set AuthScheme to OAuth, InitiateOAuth to GETANDREFRESH, and provide OAuthClientId, OAuthClientSecret, and the CallbackURL defined in your application (e.g., http://localhost:33333). The driver opens Linear in your browser so you can grant access.
- Client credentials: Set AuthScheme to OAuthClient and provide OAuthClientId and OAuthClientSecret. This authenticates the application itself, with no browser interaction, and suits machine-to-machine integrations.
By default, the driver requests the read, write scopes. The driver refreshes the access token automatically when it expires.
- Click Save & Test
-
Navigate to the Permissions tab in the Add Linear Connection page and update the User-based permissions.
With the connection configured, you are ready to connect to Linear data from Power BI.
Query Linear Tables
Follow the steps below to build a query to pull Linear data into the report:
- Open Power BI Desktop and click Get Data -> Online Services -> CData Connect AI and click "Connect"
- Click "Sign in" and authenticate with your CData Connect AI account
- After signing in, click "Connect"
- Select tables in the Navigator dialog
- Click Load to establish the connection to your Linear data from Power BI
Create Linear Data Visualizations
After connecting to the data into Power BI, you can create data visualizations in the Report view by dragging fields from the Fields pane onto the canvas. Select the dimensions and measures you wish to visualize along with the chart type.
Click Refresh to synchronize your report with any changes to the data.
Live Access to Linear Data from Data Applications
With CData Connect AI you have a direct connection to Linear data from Power BI. You can import more data, create new visualizations, build reports, and more — all without replicating Linear data.
