DataBind Charts to Outlook Data
DataBinding facilitates two-way interaction with data through UI controls. Using the CData ADO.NET Provider for Outlook streamlines the process of binding Outlook data to Windows Forms and Web controls within Visual Studio. In this article, we will demonstrate using wizards to establish a binding between Outlook data and a chart that dynamically updates. Additionally, the code walk-through section will guide you through the creation of a chart using just 10 lines of code.
Binding Data to a Chart
DataBinding to a Chart consists of three steps: Instantiate the control, configure the data source, and databind.
Configure the Connection and Select Database Objects
To create a chart control and establish a connection to Outlook, follow the steps outlined below using the Data Source Configuration Wizard. Within the wizard, you'll have the option to choose the specific Outlook entities you wish to bind to.
- In a Windows Forms project, drag and drop a Chart control from the toolbox to the form. In the Data section of the Chart properties, select DataSource and then select Add Project Data Source from the menu.
- In the Data Source Configuration Wizard that appears, select Database -> Dataset.
- In the Choose Your Data Connection step, click New Connection.
In the Add Connection dialog, click Change to select the CData Outlook Data Source.

Using OAuth Authentication
Microsoft Graph API uses OAuth 2.0 for authentication. You must register an application in the Microsoft Azure Portal to obtain OAuth credentials (Client ID and Client Secret).
Obtaining OAuth Credentials
- Log in to the Azure Portal.
- Navigate to Azure Active Directory > App registrations.
- Click New registration to create a new application.
- Enter an application name and select the appropriate account types.
- Set the Redirect URI to your application's callback URL (e.g., http://localhost:33333 for desktop apps).
- Click Register to create the application.
- On the application overview page, copy the Application (client) ID - this is your OAuthClientId.
- Navigate to Certificates & secrets and create a new client secret.
- Copy the client secret value - this is your OAuthClientSecret.
- Navigate to API permissions and add the required Microsoft Graph API permissions:
- Mail.Read - For accessing email messages
- Contacts.Read - For accessing contacts
- Calendars.Read - For accessing calendar events
- Tasks.Read - For accessing To Do tasks
- offline_access - For obtaining refresh tokens
- Click Grant admin consent to grant these permissions.
Connecting with OAuth
After setting the following connection properties, you are ready to connect:
- AuthScheme: Set this to OAuth.
- InitiateOAuth: Set this to GETANDREFRESH. The CData API Profile for Outlook will automatically walk through the OAuth process in order to obtain the access token.
- OAuthClientId: Set this to the Application (client) ID from Azure Portal.
- OAuthClientSecret: Set this to the client secret value from Azure Portal.
- TenantId: Set this to your Azure AD tenant identifier (GUID or domain name like 'contoso.onmicrosoft.com').
- CallbackURL: Set this to the Redirect URI you specified in your app registration (e.g., http://localhost:33333 for desktop apps).

When you configure the connection, you may also want to set the Max Rows connection property. This will limit the number of rows returned, which is especially helpful for improving performance when designing reports and visualizations.
- Choose the database objects you want to work with. This example uses the CalendarGroupCalendars table.
DataBind
After adding the data source and selecting database objects, you can bind the objects to the chart. This example assigns the x-axis to and the y-axis to .
- In the Chart properties, click the button in the Series property to open the Series Collection Editor.
- In the Series properties, select the columns you want for the x- and y-axes: Select columns from the menu in the XValueMember and YValueMember properties.
The chart is now databound to the Outlook data. Run the chart to display the current data.
Code Walk-through
DataBinding to Outlook data requires only a few lines of code and can be completed in three easy steps.
