How to Connect ServiceNow to Anthropic: Complete Guide

connect-servicenow-anthropic-2026

If your team runs ServiceNow, you track incidents, change requests, and configuration records in one place. Common questions include which high-priority incidents are open or which changes are scheduled this week. Those answers often wait on a report.

Connecting ServiceNow to Claude gets those answers without the report. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that links AI tools to business systems, and CData Connect AI is a managed AI gateway that offers Claude live, governed access to your ServiceNow data through one endpoint, using each user's existing permissions. Your team can then ask ServiceNow questions in plain language.

What it means to connect ServiceNow to Anthropic Claude via MCP

MCP works through two roles. Claude is the client, and an MCP server sits in front of ServiceNow. Claude sends a request, the server retrieves the data, and the results come back to Claude.

MCP server is a lightweight service that exposes a data source's tools and resources to an AI client through the standardized MCP interface.

Without a shared standard, each AI tool needs its own connection to every business system. With MCP, you build the connection once and new tools reuse it. Connect AI offers a managed remote MCP server for ServiceNow. Claude can see the objects and fields your connection exposes, and every request runs against the live instance with no replication or extract, transform, load (ETL) pipelines.

Prerequisites: accounts and permissions you'll need

Have these in place before you start:

  • ServiceNow OAuth application: Created in the System OAuth section of ServiceNow, under Application Registry. It lets Connect AI request access tokens for the REST API.

  • Admin access: Setting up inbound OAuth takes the admin role and an active OAuth 2.0 plugin.

  • Service account: A dedicated ServiceNow account for the connection, set up with least-privilege scoping.

  • Connect AI account: It hosts the connection and the MCP endpoint.

  • Claude plan: All Claude plans can add the CData Connect AI connector from the connector's directory. Free accounts can also add one custom connector.

Least-privilege scoping is granting the ServiceNow service account only the object and record access Claude needs, so a token's reach is limited to its intended scope.

Configure the ServiceNow MCP server in CData Connect AI

Custom scripts against the ServiceNow REST API need their own credentials and upkeep for every AI tool. Connect AI replaces that with one governed MCP endpoint.

Add the connection in three steps:

  1. Open Sources, click + Add Connection in Connect AI

  2. Choose ServiceNow. Search for it and select it

  3. Enter your details, on the Basic Settings tab, add a connection name and your instance URL, for example https://MyInstance12345.service-now.com/

If your instance restricts access by IP address, allow the static IP ranges in the Connect AI security documentation. Then select OAuth as the authentication method. The OAuth application comes from ServiceNow, the next section starts there.

Authenticate ServiceNow with OAuth in Connect AI

Connect AI needs permission to act on ServiceNow without handling a user's password. OAuth does this with tokens, and ServiceNow issues them from its application registry.

OAuth 2.0 is a token-based authorization standard (IETF RFC 6749) that lets an external client access instance resources without handling the user's password.

In ServiceNow

  1. Navigate to System OAuth, select Application Registry, and click New

  2. Select Create an OAuth API endpoint for external clients and complete the form

  3. Save the Client ID and Client Secret that ServiceNow generates

In Connect AI

  1. Enter the OAuth Client Id and OAuth Client Secret

  2. Click Sign in, log in to ServiceNow, and approve the permissions

  3. Click Save & Test. When the Status shows Authenticated, the Data Model tab lists your objects and fields

Tokens come from your instance's oauth_token.do endpoint, so Connect AI asks only for the two credentials above. Claude signs in to Connect AI separately, which the next section covers.

Connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and the Agent SDK to live ServiceNow data

Teams use Claude in more than one place. Point each client at the Connect AI MCP endpoint, https://mcp.cloud.cdata.com/mcp.

Claude Desktop

  1. Open Settings and click Connectors

  2. Click Browse connectors and select CData Connect AI

  3. Click Connect and sign in to Connect AI

  4. Set each tool to Always allow, Needs approval, or Block

Add remote connectors here, since the config file is for local servers only. Connectors are brokered through your Claude account, so Claude Code can use the same one when you sign in with that account.

Claude Code

  1. Create a personal access token on the Connect AI Settings page

  2. Base64 encode your email and token

  3. Run this command: claude mcp add --transport http connectmcp https://mcp.cloud.cdata.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Basic "

  4. Run claude mcp list to confirm the connection. The token acts as your password, so store it securely

Agent SDK

  1. Add the server to the mcpServers option with type: http, the endpoint URL, and the same header

  2. Add the tools to allowedTools. Tool names follow the pattern mcp____, and a wildcard such as mcp__connectmcp__* also works. Listed tools run without a permission prompt

Once connected, ask Claude a plain question. Here are a few to start with:

  • "Show me all open incidents by assignment group."

  • "What's the average resolution time for P1 tickets this month?"

  • "List change requests awaiting approval."

Governance, security, and troubleshooting tips

Sharing ServiceNow data with an AI tool raises a fair question: who can see what, and who asked for it?

Connect AI answers it with three controls:

  • Permissions: Administrators set what each user can fetch and act on for every connection

  • Authentication model: Shared authentication uses one service account. Where a data source supports per-user authentication, each person signs in with their own credentials, so Claude returns only what that account can access

  • Audit trail: Every request appears in the Query Log with the user, connection, status, and timestamp. Audit events can also be sent to your SIEM

If Claude returns no results, confirm that the connection Status is Authenticated, the user has permission for that object in Connect AI, and the service account can read it in ServiceNow.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need before I can connect ServiceNow to Anthropic Claude?

You need a ServiceNow instance and the security_admin role for OAuth setup, a Connect AI account, and a Claude account.

How does CData Connect AI connect ServiceNow to Claude without moving data or writing custom code?

Connect AI is a managed MCP server in front of ServiceNow, so you configure a connection instead of building an integration. Requests run against your live instance, so there's no replication to maintain.

What are the steps to connect ServiceNow to Claude using an MCP server?
  1. Create an OAuth application in ServiceNow.

  2. Add ServiceNow in Connect AI and click Save & Test.

  3. Add the Connect AI endpoint to Claude.

  4. Ask a plain question.

How do I know the connection is working?

In Connect AI, the Status shows Authenticated and the Data Model tab lists your objects. In Claude Code, run claude mcp list. In any client, ask a plain question, such as "List change requests awaiting approval."

Is it safe to connect live ServiceNow data to Claude?

Access uses OAuth and your existing permissions. Administrators control what each user can fetch and act on, and every request is recorded in the Query Log.
