Import TaxJar Data into the Power BI Service for Visualizations
Power BI transforms your company's data into rich visuals for you to collect and organize so you can focus on what matters to you. When paired with CData Connect AI, you get access to TaxJar data for visualizations, dashboards, and more. This article shows how to connect to TaxJar in CData Connect AI, publish a dataset from Power BI Desktop to the Power BI Service and then create reports on TaxJar data in the Power BI service.
Configure TaxJar Connectivity for Power BI Service
Connectivity to TaxJar from Power BI Service is made possible through CData Connect AI. To work with TaxJar data from Power BI Service, we start by creating and configuring a TaxJar connection.
- Log into Connect AI, click Sources, and then click Add Connection
- Select "TaxJar" from the Add Connection panel

Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to TaxJar.
To authenticate to the TaxJar API, first obtain the API Key from the TaxJar UI.
NOTE: the API is available only for Professional and Premium TaxJar plans.
If you already have a Professional or Premium plan you can find the API Key by logging in the TaxJar UI and navigating to Account -> TaxJar API. After obtaining the API Key, you can set it in the APIKey connection property.
Additional Notes
- By default, the CData connector will retrieve data of the last 3 months in cases where the entity support date range filtering. You can set StartDate to specify the minimum creation date of the data retrieved.
- If the API Key has been created for a sandbox API account please set UseSandbox to true, but not all endpoints will work as expected. For more information, refer to the TaxJar developer documentation.
- Click Save & Test

Navigate to the Permissions tab in the Add TaxJar Connection page and update the User-based permissions.
With the connection configured, you are ready to connect to TaxJar data from the Power BI service.
Publish a Dataset from Power BI Desktop
Once you connect to TaxJar in Connect AI, you can create a dataset in Power BI desktop and publish the dataset to the Power BI service.
- Open Power BI Desktop and click Get Data -> Online Services -> CData Connect AI and click "Connect"
- Click "Sign in" and authenticate with your CData Connect AI account
- After signing in, click "Connect"
- Select tables in the Navigator dialog
- Click Load to establish the connection to your TaxJar data from Power BI
- Define any relationships between the selected entities on the Relationships tab.
- Click Publish (from the Home menu) and select a Workspace.
Build Reports and Dashboards on TaxJar Data in the Power BI Service
Now that you have published a dataset to the Power BI service, you can create new reports and dashboards based on the published data:
- Log in to PowerBI.com.
- Click Workspaces and select a workspace.
- Click Create and select Report.
- Select the published dataset for the report.

- Choose fields and visualizations to add to your report.
