Microsoft Planner ODBC Driver

The Microsoft Planner ODBC Driver is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with live data from Microsoft Planner, directly from any applications that support ODBC connectivity.

Access Microsoft Planner data like you would a database - read, write, and update Microsoft Planner Buckets, Plans, Tasks, etc. through a standard ODBC Driver interface.



Update Microsoft Planner data by creating a linked table in Microsoft Access with the CData Microsoft Planner ODBC Driver.

CData ODBC drivers connect your data to any database management tool that supports Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). This includes many of the most popular productivity tools, adding new capabilities for document sharing and collaboration. Using the CData ODBC driver for Microsoft Planner, you can update live Microsoft Planner data in Microsoft Access; for example, you can make updates that can be immediately seen by other users.

Connect to Microsoft Planner as an ODBC Data Source

If you have not already, first specify connection properties in an ODBC DSN (data source name). This is the last step of the driver installation. You can use the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to create and configure ODBC DSNs.

You can connect without setting any connection properties for your user credentials. Below are the minimum connection properties required to connect.

  • InitiateOAuth: Set this to GETANDREFRESH. You can use InitiateOAuth to avoid repeating the OAuth exchange and manually setting the OAuthAccessToken.
  • Tenant (optional): Set this if you wish to authenticate to a different tenant than your default. This is required to work with an organization not on your default Tenant.

When you connect the Driver opens the MS Planner OAuth endpoint in your default browser. Log in and grant permissions to the Driver. The Driver then completes the OAuth process.

  1. Extracts the access token from the callback URL and authenticates requests.
  2. Obtains a new access token when the old one expires.
  3. Saves OAuth values in OAuthSettingsLocation to be persisted across connections.

Create a Linked Table to Tasks Data

Follow the steps below to create a linked table, which enables you to access live Tasks data.

  1. On the External Data tab in Access, click ODBC Database.
  2. Select the option to link to the data source. A linked table will enable you to read from and write data to the Tasks table.
  3. Select the CData Microsoft Planner data source from the Machine Data Source tab.

  4. Select the Tasks table. For more information on this table, see the "Data Model" chapter in the help documentation.
  5. Double-click the linked table to make edits. The linked table will always have up-to-date data and any changes will be reflected back to the underlying table.
