The SAP Netweaver Gateway ODBC Driver is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with live data from SAP Netweaver Gateway, directly from any applications that support ODBC connectivity.

Access SAP Netweaver Gateway data like you would a database - read, write, and update SAP Netweaver Gateway Entities, etc. through a standard ODBC Driver interface.

Query SAP Netweaver Gateway Data through ODBC in Node.js

Use node-odbc to execute SQL queries against SAP Netweaver Gateway data from Node.js.

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime environment that allows you to run JavaScript code outside of a browser. With the CData ODBC Driver for SAP Netweaver Gateway, you can access live SAP Netweaver Gateway data from Node.js apps and scripts. In this article, we walk through installing node-odbc and the required tools to create a simple Node.js app with access to live SAP Netweaver Gateway data.

With built-in optimized data processing, the CData ODBC Driver offers unmatched performance for interacting with live SAP Netweaver Gateway data in Node.js. When you issue complex SQL queries from Node.js to SAP Netweaver Gateway, the driver pushes supported SQL operations, like filters and aggregations, directly to SAP Netweaver Gateway and utilizes the embedded SQL engine to process unsupported operations client-side (often SQL functions and JOIN operations).

Connecting to SAP Netweaver Gateway Data

If you have not already done so, provide values for the required connection properties in the data source name (DSN). You can use the built-in Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to configure the DSN. This is also the last step of the driver installation. See the "Getting Started" chapter in the help documentation for a guide to using the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to create and configure a DSN.

SAP Gateway allows both basic and OAuth 2.0 authentication. You can use basic authentication to connect to your own account, or you can use OAuth to enable other users to retrieve data from your service with their accounts. In addition to authenticating, set the following connection properties to access SAP Gateway tables.

  • Url: Set this to the URL of your environment, or to the full URL of the service. For example, the full URL might appear as: https://sapes5.sapdevcenter.com/sap/opu/odata/IWBEP/GWSAMPLE_BASIC/. In this example, the environment URL would just be: https://sapes5.sapdevcenter.com.
  • Namespace: Set the appropriate Service Namespace. In the example above, IWBEP is the namespace. It is optional if the full URL to the service is specified.
  • Service: Set this to the service you want to retrieve data from. In the example above, the service is GWSAMPLE_BASIC. It is not required if the full URL is specified.

Authenticate via Basic Authentication

In basic authentication, you use your login credentials to connect. Set the following properties:

  • User: This is the username you use to log in to SAP Gateway.
  • Password: This is the password you use to log in to SAP Gateway.

Authenticate via OAuth Authentication

You can connect to SAP Gateway using the embedded OAuth connectivity (without setting any additional authentication connection properties). When you connect, the OAuth endpoint opens in your browser. Log in and grant permissions to complete the OAuth process. See the OAuth section in the online Help documentation for more information on other OAuth authentication flows.

Building node-odbc

In order to connect to SAP Netweaver Gateway through the CData ODBC Driver, you need to build node-odbc manually (after installing the required tools).

Installing the Required Tools

The following commands install the tools required to build node-odbc (note the -g parameter, which installs the tools globally).

npm i -g windows-build-tools
npm i -g node-gyp

Building node-odbc

After installing the required tools, create a directory for the Node.js app and install odbc (which builds the binary for us to use in our Node.js script).

mkdir nodeodbc
cd nodeodbc
npm i -g node

Querying SAP Netweaver Gateway from Node.js

With the ODBC Driver installed, a DSN Configured, and node-odbc built, we are ready to query live SAP Netweaver Gateway data from a Node.js app. The sample code below connects to a specific DSN and queries the SalesOrderLineItems table.

myscript.js

const odbc = require('odbc');

async function querySAPGateway() {
    const connection = await odbc.connect(`DSN=CData SAPGateway Source`);
    const data = await connection.query('SELECT ProductID, Quantity FROM SalesOrderLineItems');
    console.log(data);
}

querySAPGateway();

Once you write the app, use node to execute the script:

node myscript.js
