EDI 835

An EDI 835 document is a specific type of X12 EDI message called an electronic remittance advice (ERA). Healthcare insurance providers send EDI 835 documents to healthcare service providers, like hospitals, when the insurance provider has approved payment for specific claims submitted by the service provider. The EDI 835 message confirms that the service provider is owed payment for healthcare services performed in accordance with the patient's insurance plan.

EDI 835 documents are sent in response to EDI 837 documents, which contain the claim and a request for payment. Once the insurance provider has approved the claim, it sends an EDI 835 containing details of the approved claims and the appropriate payment.
