EDI 856

An EDI 856 is a type of X12 EDI document called an Advance Shipment Notice (ASN). An ASN indicates that ordered items are being prepared for shipment and includes details on expected delivery. ASNs are typically sent by a fulfillment party when a purchasing party has requested the purchase of their goods.

ASNs tend to follow a series of other EDI document exchanges, such as EDI 850s (Purchase Orders), EDI 855s (Purchase Order Acknowledgments), and EDI 810s (Invoices). Sending an ASN concludes the purchasing phase and initiates the shipment phase in a fulfillment cycle.
