The Sugar ODBC Driver is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with live Sugar account data, directly from any applications that support ODBC connectivity.

Access CRM data like you would a database - read, write, and update Leads, Contacts, Opportunities, Accounts, etc. through a standard ODBC Driver interface.

Connect to Sugar CRM Data from PowerBuilder

This article demonstrates how to use the CData ODBC Driver for Sugar CRM to connect to Sugar CRM data and execute queries in PowerBuilder.

The CData ODBC Driver for Sugar CRM can be used from any platform or development technology that supports ODBC, including PowerBuilder. This article shows how to connect to Sugar CRM data and execute queries from the Database Painter and controls such as the DataWindow.

Connect to Sugar CRM as an ODBC Data Source

If you have not already, first specify connection properties in an ODBC DSN (data source name). This is the last step of the driver installation. You can use the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to create and configure ODBC DSNs.

The User and Password properties, under the Authentication section, must be set to valid SugarCRM user credentials. This will use the default OAuth token created to allow client logins. OAuthClientId and OAuthClientSecret are required if you do not wish to use the default OAuth token.

You can generate a new OAuth consumer key and consumer secret in Admin -> OAuth Keys. Set the OAuthClientId to the OAuth consumer key. Set the OAuthClientSecret to the consumer secret.

Additionally, specify the URL to the SugarCRM account.

Note that retrieving SugarCRM metadata can be expensive. It is advised that you store the metadata locally as described in the "Caching Metadata" chapter of the help documentation.

Create a Profile for the ODBC Driver for Sugar CRM

Follow the steps below to use the Database Painter tool to create a database profile based on an ODBC DSN (data source name) for Sugar CRM. In the Database Painter, you can use wizards and the UI to work with Sugar CRM data.

  1. In PowerBuilder, click Tools -> Database Painter.
  2. In the Objects window in the Database Painter, right-click the ODBC node and click New Profile.
  3. On the Connection tab, enter a name for the profile and select the Sugar CRM DSN in the Data Source menu.
  4. To view and modify a table, right-click a table and then click Edit Data -> Grid.

Using Sugar CRM Data with PowerBuilder Controls

You can use standard PowerBuilder objects to connect to ODBC data sources and execute queries. The following example shows how to retrieve Sugar CRM data into a DataWindow. You can add the following code to the open method:

SQLCA.DBMS = "ODBC" SQLCA.DBParm = "ConnectString='DSN=CData SugarCRM Source'" CONNECT USING SQLCA; dw_accounts.SetTransObject(SQLCA); dw_accounts.Retrieve();
