Excel Add-In for HPCC

The CData Excel Add-In for HPCC Systems provides formulas that can query HPCC Systems data. The following three steps show how you can automate the following task: Search HPCC Systems data for a user-specified value and then organize the results into an Excel spreadsheet.

The syntax of the CDATAQUERY formula is the following: =CDATAQUERY(Query, [Connection], [Parameters], [ResultLocation]);

This formula requires three inputs:

  • Query: The declaration of the HPCC Systems data records you want to retrieve, written in standard SQL.
  • Connection: Either the connection name, such as HPCCConnection1, or a connection string. The connection string consists of the required properties for connecting to HPCC Systems data, separated by semicolons.

    To connect, set the following connection properties: Set URL to the machine name or IP address of the server and the port the server is running on, for example, https://server:port. The User and Password are required to authenticate to the HPCC Systems cluster specified in the URL. Note that LDAP authentication is not currently supported by our ODBC driver.

    Set Version to the WsSQL Web server version. Note that if you have not already done so, you will need to install the WsSQL service on the HPCC Systems server. The WsSQL Web service is used to interact with the underlying HPCC Systems platform.

    Set Cluster to the target cluster.

  • ResultLocation: The cell that the output of results should start from.

Pass Spreadsheet Cells as Inputs to the Query

The procedure below results in a spreadsheet that organizes all the formula inputs in the first column.

  1. Define cells for the formula inputs. In addition to the connection inputs, add another input to define a criterion for a filter to be used to search HPCC Systems data, such as ShipCity.
  2. In another cell, write the formula, referencing the cell values from the user input cells defined above. Single quotes are used to enclose values such as addresses that may contain spaces.
  3. =CDATAQUERY("SELECT * FROM hpcc::test::orders WHERE ShipCity = '"&B6&"'","URL="&B1&";User="&B2&";password="&B3&";Version="&B4&";Cluster="&B5&";Provider=HPCC",B7)
  4. Change the filter to change the data.
